SN-2 (N-2) Thermal Overload Protector
N-2 delivers the maximum protection in the smallest package at an excellent price. At the heart of the protector is a bimetal Snap–action disc. When the temperature of this disc reaches its pre-calibrated temperature it snaps open, resulting in an open circuit. This temperature is reached during a fault condition. After the circuit breaks, the system cools and the N-2 automatically resets, allowing power to be restored to the circuit.

N-2 provides complete protection in:
Overload Condition: Gradual increase in winding temperature due to overload is sensed by the N-2 TOP causing it to switch open and protect the Device from overloading.


Lock Rotor Condition: High current due to Locked Rotor Condition generates high internal heat in the TOP causing it to switch open within 3 to 10 seconds.

Short Circuit Condition: Very high short circuit current generates instantaneous internal heat inside the TOP causing it to switch open in a fraction of second and protect the device.

N-2 Thermal Overload Protector is excellent for use in motor, transformer and lighting applications. It is available in 2, 4, 8, 12 Amps ratings for 120, 240VAC (10,000 cycles).

Applications
The applications are divided in two categories:
Temperature control: Here the thermostat is used to control temperature of end product between two levels.

Thermal overload protection: Here the thermostat is used to protect end product from overheating caused by overloading, blocked ventilation, increased ambient temperature, etc.

Switching Action
N-2 is available in single poles, single throw (SPST) switching action:

Automatic Reset: It is built to open its contacts on temperature rise. The temperature rise takes place due to rise in external temperature and internal heat generated due to I²R loss of Bimetal Disc.


Insulation Sleeve
N-2 TOP is supplied with Heat shrinkable spiral wound polyester sleeve.

Thin wall thickness: Due to sleeves thin wall thickness the thermal response of N-2 TOP to change in external temperature is very quick.

Good shear resistance: Polyester material has very good strength against shear force. It protects N-2 TOP from sharp objects.

High breakdown voltage: This sleeve can withstand breakdown voltage above3 KVA for 60 seconds.


Terminals
N-2 is supplied crimp type terminals. Two configurations are available.

Aligned: Both the terminals are on same side.

180°Angled: Both the terminals are on oposite side.

Temperature, Differentials and Tolerances
The N-2 Thermal Overload Protector has a snap action opening and closing of contacts, which ensures no sparking or chattering.

N-2 TOP is supplied to customer specified open and close temperature set points with a tolerance on both set points. Temperature difference between cut-off and cut-in temperature is called differential temperature.

- Cut-off Temperature range: 50 to 170°C
- Cut off Temperature Tolerance: ± 4%
- Differential Temperature: 10-40°C

As the current flow through N2 increases, internal heat of N2 increases as well.
This causes reduction in effective cut-off temperature.
